Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for Blue Cross Visitors Insurance?
Anyone between 31 days and 79 years of age who is not covered by a provincial health plan: visitors to Canada, immigrants and permanent residents awaiting coverage, foreign workers with a work permit, foreign students with a study permit, super visa applicants and holders, and Canadians returning after a long absence.
How much coverage is available?
$50,000, $100,000, or $150,000. The $150,000 option is available to those 74 and under. For the Canadian Super Visa, a minimum of $100,000 is required.
Does it qualify for the Canadian Super Visa?
Yes. Select at least $100,000 in coverage for a 365-day policy period to meet the Super Visa insurance requirement from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Can I buy coverage after my visitor has already arrived?
Yes. If purchased within 30 days of arrival (or within 30 days of the end of similar coverage), a 3-day waiting period applies to illness — accidents and injuries are covered immediately. Buying before arrival avoids any waiting period entirely.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Stable pre-existing conditions may be covered: 3-month stability for ages 54 and under; 6-month stability for ages 55–79. However, certain cardiovascular, neurological, and pulmonary conditions are always excluded regardless of stability period.
How long can the policy last?
Up to 365 days per contract. Extensions are available if you remain eligible and have not had a claim during the current period. If your stay exceeds 366 days, a new contract must be issued.
