Allianz Travel Insurance is designed for Canadians travelling outside their home province or territory. Emergency medical coverage of up to $10,000,000 is available, with optional or bundled trip cancellation, baggage, and accidental death protection. A 10-day free-look period applies to most plans.

Free look period: You have 10 days after purchase to cancel most plans for a full premium refund, provided you have not departed and no claimable event has occurred. This does not apply to Trip Cancellation & Interruption-only plans or the All-inclusive Package Plan.

Emergency Medical Benefits

The following benefits are covered under the Emergency Medical Plan and all plans that include emergency medical coverage, up to the overall $10,000,000 maximum:

  • Hospital accommodation (private or semi-private room)
  • Physician, specialist, anesthesiologist services
  • Medically necessary lab tests and X-rays
  • Up to one follow-up visit within 15 days of incident
  • Private duty nursing — up to $10,000
  • Prescription medication (30-day supply)
  • Rental of crutches, splints, braces, prosthetics
  • Physiotherapist, chiropractor, podiatrist, chiropodist — up to $500 per profession
  • Accidental dental injury — up to $10,000,000 (sum insured)
  • Emergency dental pain relief — up to $500
  • Local ground, air, or sea ambulance (incl. mountain/sea evacuation)
  • Emergency air transportation to appropriate facility or home province
  • Return of travelling companion / dependent children
  • Incidental expenses while hospitalized (meals, accommodation, phone, TV, transport, child care) — up to $500/day, $5,000 max
  • Bedside companion — round-trip economy airfare for one family member or friend, plus accommodation, meals, phone and local transport up to $300/day, $1,500 max
  • Pet return or boarding — up to $500

Pre-existing Conditions & Stability

Pre-existing conditions are covered if they were stable during the required period before your effective date. A condition is stable if there was no new diagnosis, new or changed treatment or medication, new signs or symptoms, hospitalization, specialist referral, or outstanding test results.

Exceptions that are always considered stable: routine insulin adjustments (if insulin was not first prescribed during the stability period), routine Coumadin/Warfarin adjustments, brand-to-generic medication changes, and minor ailments that ended more than 30 days before the effective date with limited treatment.

Comprehensive Package — Trip Cancellation & Interruption

The Comprehensive Package adds trip cancellation (before departure) and trip interruption (after departure) coverage. There are 23 covered reasons, including:

  • Sickness, injury or medical condition (you or travelling companion)
  • Death of family member (not travelling)
  • Quarantine (individual, not broad public order)
  • Traffic accident on departure date
  • Involuntary job loss (permanent employment, 12+ months)
  • New employment requiring presence during trip dates
  • Employer relocation of primary residence (150+ km)
  • Mandatory evacuation at destination
  • Natural disaster or severe weather causing carrier delay (24+ hours)
  • Strike (not announced before policy purchase)
  • Home becomes uninhabitable
  • Destination becomes uninhabitable
  • Legal proceeding attendance required
  • Armed forces reassignment
  • Travel documents stolen
  • Visa refusal by destination or transit country
  • Pregnancy discovered after policy purchase
  • Canadian travel supplier default (ceasing operations)

Key Exclusions

  • Pre-existing conditions not meeting the stability period
  • Terminal condition diagnosed in the 2 years prior to effective date
  • Unrepaired aneurysm 4 cm or larger
  • Heart condition if nitroglycerin prescribed in the 90 days prior
  • Congestive heart failure treated in the 2 years prior
  • Kidney condition requiring dialysis in the 90 days prior
  • Lung condition requiring home oxygen or oral steroids in 90 days prior
  • Cancer treatment (other than basal/squamous cell or hormone-only breast) in 90 days prior
  • Bone marrow, stem cell, or organ transplant in the 2 years prior
  • Elective, routine, or experimental treatment
  • Dental treatment (other than emergency dental covered benefits)
  • Pregnancy complications after week 31 or high-risk pregnancy
  • Mental, psychiatric or psychological conditions
  • Alcohol (BAC over 80 mg/100 mL), drug or substance abuse
  • Professional sporting competition or training
  • High-risk activities: skydiving, BASE jumping, hang gliding, bungee jumping, caving, heli-skiing, climbing sports, free diving, SCUBA beyond 20m
  • High-altitude activities (above 4,500 m)
  • Operating or crewing any aircraft or commercial vehicle/watercraft
  • Travel to destinations under Canadian government "avoid all travel" or "avoid non-essential travel" advisory
  • Known, foreseeable, or expected events at time of purchase
  • War, acts of war, civil unrest, political risk, terrorism
  • Natural disasters, nuclear reaction, radiation
  • Cyber risk, illegal acts (unless victim), military duty

Claims & Emergency Assistance

Contact Allianz Global Assistance before seeking treatment. In a serious emergency, get to hospital immediately and have someone call within 24 hours of admission and before any surgery. Failure to call without reasonable cause results in benefits being limited to 80% of eligible expenses.

Claims should be reported within 30 days of occurrence and written proof of loss submitted within 90 days (in no event later than 1 year). Submit claims through the secure online portal: www.allianzassistanceclaims.ca

Can I extend my coverage if my trip is extended?
Yes, if you contact your insurance representative before your existing coverage expires, you have no reason to seek medical attention during the new period, and you have not submitted a claim. Each extension is a separate contract.
